Finding Your Place: How a Big Room Planning Led Me to Scrum
It’s all about knowing where your place is 💡
Somewhere in the summer of 2019, I was still a part of the training team of Telenet group and to align our next training tracks to the new products, we were invited to this brand new thing : a Big Room Planning. 🎉
At this time I only knew a bit about Agile and I had no idea what to expect from it, except that we would talk with people to know where our focus and support would be. A bit boring, huh? Except that :
- It was a themed day : “Come as you would be if you were not working today” WTF 🧐
And as soon it started,
- Vivid discussions started aaaallllllll around.
- People came with ideas
- Started drafting plans on paper
- Ran to other teams to check if timings were OK
The only thing is that 👇
- Nobody had time for us. It was too early in the plans to already think about training people. So we decided to leave the session and go back to our desks. 😕
For me, it was too late. Leaving this boiling cauldron of creativity to go back to Business As Usual felt wrong to me. I wanted to go back there and live it from the inside. 🔥
This was my place. And realizing it paved the way to become a Scrum Master.
Martijn Oost Evan Van Lissum Melissa Verhulst this one was your initiative I think 😊

It was the brainchild of a smaller Dutch consultancy firm (can’t quite remember the name). We had just joined the organization about a week earlier, and honestly, it was kind of crazy. The consultants mainly worked with upper management (as they tend to do ;-)), while we were tasked with getting these newly formed Tribes and Squads (Yeah SpotiSafe!)—complete with brand new Product Owners and Scrum Masters—up and running for the BRP. Like you said: There was no training in place for SM or PO. So yeah, it was pretty messy from the get-go. Here is that dependency board that you see in the back of your picture at the end of the day. LOL

Oh Erik Collard 🔥, this was so far lost in my memory, I couldn't even believe the picture.
"That blonde guy in the back right looks like me, you know?" To my surprise, it was me! 😂
