Group Feedback Exercise: A 90-Minute Team Game-Changer
Feedback as a group exercise 👇
Giving feedback is like drinking water. We know it's important but we don't do it enough 💁♂️
I like this feedback group exercise to do as a team :
- Create a "Feedback inbox" for each team member. Make it "private" so noone gets distracted by what other people write
- First round (of 3 minutes) : Member 1 writes feedback to Member 2, Member 2 to Member 3 etc.
- Second round : You rotate : Member 1 writes to Member 3, etc.
- Do as many rounds as you have team members, so that everyone can give feedback to each member
- At the end, reveal the stickies. Give 5 minutes for everyone to silently read the feedback they received
- Then, in (shorter) rounds, every member summarizes the feedback they received and - if needed - can ask clarification about a feedback received. Facilitator should start to lead by example.
This exercise works well because 👍
→ In just 60 to 90-minute time, several people receive feedback from several people.
→ The conclusion (summarizing) makes people anchor the feedback
→ It's an introvert-friendly exercise, due to the fact that you give the feedback silently and the conclusion is free to everyone
→ Can work for both remote sessions and onsite sessions
Pre-requisites ☝
✅ A certain level of psychological safety in the team
✅ Include you (as a facilitator) in the exercise
✅ Give a clear frame at the beginning : Have good intentions, aim to make people progress, be specific in the feedback etc.
If you have any other experience or idea to share feedback as a group, feel free to share in the comments 😊

Very nice post, Erik Collard !
Feedback is so important (and very often discarded because too risky and sensitive).
I do like the Netflix framework for feedback (the 4A):

Do you know it?
