My 2-month audiobook experiment: a brutal goodbye
Ok, during 2 months I gave it a try with audiobooks. Here’s my main takeaway : I hate it 😅
Not intending to bash it, I’m still very thankful for the people who advised me to try it. 🙌Happy that it works for you !
But what didn’t work for me :
• The voice of the reader is very monocordous and even boring 💤
• When a new chapter starts, and you have no way to check if it’s going to be a long or a short one
• When the guy says “As you can see on the graph below” but man, there is no graph below, it’s a damn audiobook 🤷♂️
• You start the book and the app shows the countdown that says 16:41 left and you realize it’s not 16 minutes and 41 seconds but 16 HOURS AND 41 MINUTES, no. You don’t motivate people like that. ❌
• When you realize that you’ve been singing “The Final Countdown” in your head but you have no idea if it’s been 20 seconds or 8 minutes, so you need to rewind the book until you recognize something that already got you bored a bit before. 😩
• If you like a specific part of it, you can't just take a picture of the page or do annotations in the book
• When Audible says you still have 2 credits left, and you’re torn between losing them or losing a few more hours of your life using them 💀
So voila, I guess my audiobook journey is done here. Long live the real books with real pages and the too loud music in the car ! 🎶

I will say I do love my kindle paperwhite reader. Love being able to export my highlights and notes too. Audio book for me is at best ok. Occasionally there is a homerun like when the game of thrones actor that portrayed lttlefinger narrates The Art of War.

If you ever reconsider, here is a golden tip: ALWAYS listen to a sample of the audiobook first. This gives you a good idea on the reader’s intonation. Audiobooks read by the author are usually much easier on the ears as well.
