The Real Power of Feedback: Embrace the Unexpected

One of my 2 Squads recently noticed that we don’t share feedback very often so we turned our Retrospective into a feedback session - several rounds of rotating pairs.

The general feedback was : it’s great to receive feedback about what you already know. However... you don’t know what you don’t know, right?

So it becomes truly valuable when the insights are unexpected - either because :

* Perception is subjective and therefore fluctuating (a same situation can lead to different perceptions)
* Inner strengths are unconscious - the lower the effort, the less you expect impact (positive blind spots)
* Inner or behavioral weaknesses are often unconscious or resisted (negative blind spots)

Sometimes the insights are even coming from YOU, driven by the conversation you're having.

So whatever your reason not to ask / give feedback is, it probably doesn't compete with the countless benefits of such a discussion. Might be scary and intimidating when you're not used to it - take it as an extra reason to get started now ! ✌

Love thiiiis! Nothing beats some nice intentional feedback, especially when requested by the team itself. I recently finished a great book on this, called "Thanks for the Feedback" which breaks things down further in terms of the types of feedback there are, how to request them, and how to not dismiss them as a receiver📚 Super super interesting and it actually inspired me to build an activity around Feedback expectations & routines. Lemme know if you're up to experiment with that together 🙌

Funny, I was just preparing today a similar retrospective on feedback 😁 I am curious, did you discuss the value of feedback and how to give feedback in a previous session or during the retro?
