Welcome Back From Holiday? Skip the Strategic Meetings—Your Brain Isn't Ready

"AH she's finally back from Holidays tomorrow, I'll book a 1-hour meeting with her in the morning to decide this strategic thing" 💡

Or... don't. 💁‍♂️

Common expectation : Your colleague is back from Holidays so she'll be rested, energized and ready to shoot! 🤩
Common situation : Your colleague is back from Holidays and... needs some time to readjust to the work routine before being 100% in the game again. 😓

WHY THOUGH?

- A shift from the relaxing vibes of holidays to the responsibilities of work induce a brutal increase of your cortisol levels (the hormone stress). And brutal is never good for you body. 😵
- Cognitive load is usually way higher at work than holidays... even active holidays. What is "normal" cognitive load on a daily basis will be overwhelming on your first day back. 😩
- "I'm happy to be back" is one of the biggest lies of this century 🤥

So please be kind and comprehensive to your colleagues. You won't get anything good from soliciting them on Day 1. It's not a lack of motivation, bad energy balance, irresponsibility or whatever... it's just how our bodies work 😊

You forgot the gadjillion emails you have to go through on your first day after a holiday 🙃. Anyhow, I have always empathized with people having to land after holidays. I must be really desperate to book something in the afternoon of the first day that someone is back. Usually I only claim some time the second day.

Excellent point! When someone returns from a holiday, they often need time to adjust back to work. The shift from relaxation to work can increase stress and cognitive load. It’s best to give them some space and time to get back into the swing of things.. Thanks for sharing Erik Collard 🔥
