When Plan B Fails, Improvise Like Your Career Depends On It

Sometimes, things don't go as planned... 😩

Yesterday I wanted to introduce the concept of relative estimations (yes Story Points, haters gonna hate) to my team and to start with a fun activity, I got inspired by a recent conversation with Jord Rolland de Rengervé and opted for a few rounds of Hitster : Imagine a blind test but instead of naming the song, you need to place the song on a timeline, between other songs. So yeah, comparing songs with each other, you get the link with relative estimations. 😄

Except that 👇

I started scanning the QR codes on the cards → The connection between the HITSTER app and Spotify didn't work.
Then I tried to just type the songname on Spotify → Spotify didn't give me any sound

After losing 3/4 minutes on technical disasters and starting to lose my team members as well, I only had one solution left : Singing the songs. ☠

I'm not really a good singer so spending 10 minutes in a workshop singing Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tina Turner, Dany Brillant and Diams during a workshop... was not on my bucket list.

My key learning is : If you don't have a plan B... get ready to improvise 😅

Thank you Erik Collard 🔥 for daring to share not only successes but also struggles. Too often we get biased perception on how others are successfully facilitating events. When we fail, we may feel miserable by comparing our failures to the massive success we see online. Yes other facilitators are failing but it was also an opportunity to learn. It was refreshing to see that we are not alone struggling. Thank you for sharing Erik Collard 🔥 !

For a moment I thought you were going to do relative estimation using the Hitster principle of putting years in a timeline. Which would be quite cool right?
I imagine it goes as this:

You take all the stories/PBI's. Write them on a post it note (can also be on Miro) and one by one you let people add them to their relative scale. Each person does this individualy. When done you compare the lines of each person and compare differences. Now it's time to discuss the relative size of the differences.

Hitster estimation, Ready to try it out?
